About The Data

About GEMINI Data

GEMINI holds granular hospitalization-level data on 37 hospitals from 20 healthcare organizations across Ontario. GEMINI data include all patients admitted to the department of medicine or special care unit and capture >60% of all adult medical and intensive care unit beds in Ontario. GEMINI data are comprised of administrative data (CIHI DAD, NACRS) linked to clinical data extracted from hospital electronic health records. Clinical data include but are not limited to laboratory measurements, radiology, vital signs, blood transfusions, clinical notes, echocardiagram measurements, and medications.

About the GEMINI Data Dictionary

The GEMINI Data Dictionary is an essential resource for anyone doing research at GEMINI. The information in this Data Dictionary is almost entirely based on the metadata belonging to the datasets described. For any questions or comments, please contact .

Data Tables Available For Research

The following data tables are available at GEMINI for approved research projects. Datacuts of GEMINI data are provided on a project-specific basis. Please refer to Data Availability for hospital or table specific data availability.

Hospitals Included

The following hospitals are included within the GEMINI network. Please refer to Data Availability for hospital and table specific data availability.

Source and Reference Legend

The following sources and references can be used as an additional resource for GEMINI data.

Cohort Data

The following describes the cohort of patients available in GEMINI data:

  • GIM: Patients admitted to or discharged from General Internal Medicine Service as defined by site
  • Other Med: Patients admitted to or discharged from Medicine Service, that is not GIM, as defined by site
  • ICU: Patients with an ICU touchpoint (regardless of admission/discharge service)
  • Other Inpatient: Inpatients who are not part of the above mentioned cohorts (e.g. those with an inpatient stay following surgery, or admitted to or discharged from an acute care service)
    • Surgery patients can be identified based on projects’ focus — for example, by using mrp_service_mapped == “Surgery”, identifying specific surgery types via mrp_service, or selecting encounters with relevant CCI intervention codes.

The table below describes the time period for which each cohort is available at GEMINI

Data Availability

Row

Data Availability by Hospital

The following plot describes the time period of data available at each hospital. Availability is determined by the presence of a genc_id for a given hospital and time period. Click on a hospital to see a detailed breakdown of the specific data tables available for that hospital.

Data Availability by Data Table

The following plot describes the time period available for each data table. Availability is determined by the presence of a genc_id in the relevant data table for a given time period. Click on the data table of interest for a break down of availability across different hospitals.

Data Availability by Data Variable

The following plot describes the time period available for each data table variable. Availability is determined by the presence of a genc_id for the relevant data variable in a given hospital and time period. Click on the data table of interest for an overview of data field availability. Click on the data variable of interest for a break down of availability across different hospitals.
